April 2025 marked the second state-wide Frog Month in Victoria, a collaborative effort between Melbourne Water and Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) across Victoria. Building on the success of the first frog month in October 2024, this initiative invited Victorians to use the Frog Census App to record frog calls and contribute valuable citizen science data.
The April census focused on Bibron’s Toadlet (Pseudophryne bibronii), an endangered autumn-breeding species listed under Victoria’s Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act (1988). With 70 participants submitting 154 recordings, the project yielded 164 frog records, including 9 reports of Bibron’s Toadlet and 13 different frog species overall.
The April census provided important insights into regional engagement and species distribution. The Eastern Common Froglet and Victorian Smooth Froglet were the most commonly detected species. Engagement was strongest in the Melbourne Water region, followed by Corangamite and West Gippsland CMAs, reflecting both population density and the presence of active citizen science communities.
Frog Month continues to showcase the power of citizen science in protecting Victoria’s unique amphibians. Every croak recorded helps build a clearer picture of our frog populations—and the health of our waterways.
