Air temp -4 degrees C! Massive regrowth of young willows after old trees killed. Not done by CMA, but by neighbour supported in principle by the catchment/landcare committee and perhaps with a cash subsidy. The willows were mainly on private property, but those on the small strip of public land along the creek where it goes under the road bridge were also included. I will advise the land owner re the regrowth and 'volunteer' growth. He is the Secretary of the landcare collective committee. The site has a blackberry issue as well which the landcare group funding has addressed within available funds. The good seasons of the last two years and the increased light since the mature trees were killed has contributed to both pests flora and the increased growth of more desirable species along the creek banks. The creek is more shaded, the bank better sheltered and I think the run of the water stream is deepening. Since the wetter seasons have sustained paddock grasses and reduced the bare land runoff, the water has been less turbid and I suspect the data would support that perception, although I think the salinity cycles would not be much different.
