The Yarra seems to be healthy at this point. I was expecting the salinity level to be higher than tested outcome. Stacey (student) carried out all the tests with confidence. The usual mosquito fish were in abundance along the edges along with freshwater shrimp collected. With limited access and sparse edge vegetation, bug collecting and diversity was minimal. Next month the plan is to sample at a number of sites and distances along the Yarra to obtain a true picture of the diversity. Bugs present: caddisfly, freshwater shrimp, water boatman, diving beetle, freshwater snail, bloodworm. Litter present: paper, bottles and cans.
