How to search the Waterwatch Victoria Data Management System

Step 1 - Find your Site

To find a Waterwatch site there are three options:

1. Search by name. In the Site Search section, type the name of the waterway in the Site Name box, then click search and all sites with that word in the name will be identified on the map.

2. Search using the map. If you want to search by looking at the map, you can leave all of the fields blank and click the 'Search' button (please note that this will map over 6000 sites across the whole state, so it might take a while, depending on your internet connection). You can then zoom in and out on the map to find your Site/s. To make this process faster, we suggest you select your region first (see next step).

3. Search by your region, basin, catchment and sub-catchment. If you are not sure of which region you are in, check out the map of Victoria's Catchment Management Authorities. Once you know which region you want, select your option from the drop down boxes and click the search button. All sites in the area you have defined will be identified on the map. For example, to find a site on the Nicholson River near Bairnsdale, select:

  • Region: East Gippsland
  • Basin: Tambo River
  • Catchment: Nicholson River

(please note that in many cases, the Basin and the Catchment are the same, so you will need to select it in both boxes).

Click search and all sites (active and inactive) that are in this catchment will be displayed on the map.

If you are not sure of your basin, you can use the map to find out. The pink boundaries are the region boundaries and you can switch on the basin boundaries (purple) by clicking on the white cross in the blue bubble at the top right of the map.

Step 2 - Select your Site

Once you have found the Site for which you want data, click on the green (active) or grey (inactive) Site marker. Information for that Site will appear in a white Site Results box next to the search boxes.

Step 3 - Generate a Site Report

From the Site Results box, you can view three reports:

1. Site Profile report

2. Data by Site report

3. Site Statistics report

By clicking on one of these links, you will be taken to a new page where you can modify the parameters for your report. The Site Code of your selected Site will be automatically transferred to the reports page for you.

You will need to confirm the date range for which you want data (Site visit date from and Site visit date to). If the end date is today, click NULL for end date.

You can also select the minimum Data Quality Rating for which you want data. We recommend Level 3 as the minimum Rating. However, to see all data for the Site, select Level 1. Find out more information about the State Data Confidence Framework.

Click on the 'View Report' button to generate your Site report.

We recommend exporting the Site Profile report to Word and the other reports to Excel for ease of use. You can do this by clicking on the Export icon (save icon with a green arrow).

For your reference, each site has a 2-letter region code that indicates which region it is in, followed by an underscore and a 3-letter code indicating the waterway and then 3-digit number indicating the location on the waterway. For example, CO_AIR009 = Corangamite_Aire River Site 9. Here are the region codes:

  • CO = Corangamite
  • EG = East Gippsland
  • GH = Glenelg Hopkins
  • GB = Goulburn Broken
  • MA = Mallee
  • ME = Melbourne
  • NC = North Central
  • NE = North Esat
  • WG = West Gippsland
  • WI = Wimmera
