North Central Waterwatch Program

The North Central Waterwatch program has been active since 1993. From Wycheproof to Woodend, Cohuna to Creswick and Swan Hill to Echuca, Waterwatch works with volunteers across the region to monitor the health of our waterways. Waterwatch participants include community groups such as Landcare, individuals and schools with a commitment to learning about and improving the water quality and river health in North Central Victoria.

River Detectives

Traditionally, many schools in the North Central region have monitored in an ad hoc and infrequent nature. Due to constraints in facilitator time and an increased focus on the collection of consistent and reliable Waterwatch data from the regional and state level, North Central Waterwatch developed the River Detectives program (adapted from the ‘Catchment Capers’ model used by Goulburn Broken Waterwatch). By incorporating monitoring activities into the school curriculum, this new program will help ensure schools submit regular data and that water testing equipment purchased by North Central Waterwatch is used in an effective manner.

You can download a brochure on the North Central Waterwatch program (pdf, 940 KB).

North Central Region

The North Central region is an extremely important agricultural region producing vast wealth from its irrigated industries in the north and dryland industries in the south. With the value of agricultural output valued at one billion dollars, and with prospects for significant increases in production, the region is highly motivated to work in partnership to grow and prosper in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable manner.

The North Central region comprises four major river catchments: Campaspe, Loddon, Avoca and Avon Richardson, each with its own unique opportunities and challenges. The region is renowned for its significant and diverse environmental assets. For example, the wetland system associated with the Murray River are of international importance, whilst the Box-Ironbark forests are the last remaining stand of significance in Victoria.

The North Central region contains a number of regional population centres, including the major rural city of Bendigo, and supports approximately 222,000 people. Whilst urban centres of the region such as Bendigo, Echuca, Swan Hill and Maryborough have experienced population increases recently, the population of the rural areas of the region have declined.
