Melbourne Region

The Melbourne Region is one of the most biologically diverse in Victoria. Located at the boundary of four of Australia's 80 major bioregions, it supports a wide variety of native plant and animal communities. These communities contribute to the protection of land and water resources through soil conservation, natural pest control and protection of water quality. They are also a key feature of many recreation and tourism destinations.

Sixteen of Victoria's 28 broad vegetation types occur in the Region. Today only 28% of the Port Phillip and Westernport Region is covered by natural vegetation. Major changes in land use have resulted in a significant reduction of most vegetation types, with 10 of the 15 vegetation types now occupying less than 20% of their original area.

The Region is also one of the most important in Victoria for natural and semi-natural wetlands and includes 2 sites listed under an international treaty on wetlands and waterfowl known as the Ramsar Convention.
